I've started using the paddle shifters more often on my way to work just to make the commute a bit more interesting, and I've noticed that when I manually downshift from third to second at moderate revs there's a distinct clunk that you can hear and feel, almost like drivetrain slack being taken up abruptly. It doesn't do it in automatic mode at all, the computer controlled downshifts are perfectly smooth, which makes me think the gearbox itself is mechanically fine and the issue is just that the TCU does a better job of rev matching than I do with my clumsy fingers. But then on the flip side I had a friend who knows these cars pretty well ride with me and he said that level of clunking during manual downshifts isn't normal and could point to worn dual mass flywheel or excessive backlash somewhere in the driveline. Now I'm second guessing whether I've been inadvertently damaging something by using the paddles or if this is just how a high mileage DSG behaves when you override its carefully calculated shift logic. The car drives perfectly in D and S modes which is why I haven't rushed to a shop, but I'm thinking of getting a specialist opinion on Audi transmission repair just to rule out something sinister before it gets worse. Has anyone else experienced rough manual downshifts while automatic mode remains silky smooth?
