Isn't it just the way that the car decides to throw up the red service warning exactly when you've got a fully loaded boot and a hotel booking that's non refundable, my X5 has been running like a dream for months and the second I start mentally planning the drive down to Oman the computer decides the rear pads are suddenly on their last legs even though I swear they looked fine when I washed the wheels two weeks ago but apparently the sensor knows something I don't. Now I'm in that annoying position where I either risk it and deal with the constant bonging noise and anxiety for a thousand kilometers or I scramble to find a garage that can squeeze me in before Thursday afternoon without charging me an arm and a leg for the privilege of a rush job, and since it's a BMW I know if I take it to some random place in Satwa they're going to look at the electronic parking brake like it's alien technology and I'll end up with a dashboard that looks like a christmas tree. A mate sent me a link to a page with some info on brake wear indicators and what the different warnings actually mean and said I should maybe visit now just to get a sense of what I'm in for before I start ringing around Al Quoz, because honestly half the stress is not knowing if I'm being told the truth or if someone's just seeing a guy in a hurry and smelling an opportunity to pad the invoice. If anyone's got a solid BMW guy who understands that sometimes you just need pads slapped in and the light reset without the full "while we're in there we noticed your flux capacitor is leaking" routine I'd owe you one big time because I really don't want to be that person broken down on the side of the highway near Hatta with a screaming sensor and a very unimpressed wife.
